How to reverse a duplicate check

First of all, if possible, void the check. If not possible, read on.

Determine the statement date of the last closed Bank Reconciliation.

  • If the original check date is after that date, you may use use the check date in your reversing transaction.
  • If the check was made prior to that date, you must date the new transaction a day after the last closed Bank Reconciliation statement date. 

Go into General Ledger, Individual Transaction → New → Use CD (cash disbursement) enter the date and a reference → OK 

The original transaction credited cash and debited other accounts. You will debit the cash account and credit the other accounts used in the original transaction. Use the exact same check number in your reversing transaction. An error will pop up, but that's okay. Just accept the error.

How to reverse a duplicate deposit

  • If the deposit was made prior to that date, you must date the new transaction a day after the last closed Bank Reconciliation statement date.

The original transaction debited cash and credited other accounts (most likely income). You will credit the cash account and debit the other accounts used in the original transaction. Use the exact same deposit slip number in your reversing transaction. An error will pop up, but that's okay. Just accept the error.
