Move a Member to a New Family as Head of Household

This article explains how to move an existing member into a new family record where they will be designated as the Head of Household. This process is commonly used when a member establishes a new household due to life changes such as marriage, relocation, or independence.

When to Use This Process

Use this procedure when you need to:

  • Move a member into their own household
  • Create a new family record for an existing member
  • Reflect a change in household structure

This process removes the member from their original family and creates a new family record for them.

Where to Start

  1. Select Family Directory from the navigation bar.
  2. Select the Members tab.
  3. Search for the member you want to move.

Export the Member to a New Family

  1. From the member record, select Export to move the member into a new family.
  2. When prompted, choose whether to:
    • Use the existing family address, or
    • Enter a new address

If you choose to use the existing address, it is automatically populated in the new family record.

Review and Update the New Family Record

After exporting the member:

  • Review the pre‑populated information
  • Update any known details as needed

By default, the member is assigned as Head of Household in the new family record.

Save Options

Choose the appropriate save option based on what you want to do next:

  • Save & Edit – Add additional members to the new family
    • Use Add to create a brand‑new member record
    • Use Import to move an existing member from another family
  • Save & Finish – Complete the process and return later if needed
  • Save & New – Create another new family record
  • Cancel – Exit without saving changes

Summary

Moving a member to a new family as Head of Household creates a separate family record while preserving data accuracy. This process ensures household changes are reflected correctly in the Family Directory.
