Format Postal Codes with Leading Zeros in Excel (Family List Export)

This article explains how to properly display postal codes with leading zeros when exporting a Family List to Excel. Follow these steps to ensure postal codes appear correctly in your exported file.

Why Formatting Matters

When exporting a Family List to Excel, postal codes with leading zeros may appear with an apostrophe before the first digit (e.g., '01234). This formatting issue can affect sorting and display.

Steps to Format Postal Codes Correctly

  1. In Excel, select the postal code column.
  2. Use Find and Replace to replace the apostrophe (') with nothing.
  3. Format the postal code column by highlighting the postal code column.
  4. Right-click and select Format Cells….
  5. In the Format Cells dialog, select Custom.
  6. Under Type, enter 00000 (five zeros) to ensure all postal codes display with leading zeros.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Postal codes will now display as normal, including any leading zeros.
